Something Fishy's Going On

Overview

Through a brief discussion, students will learn about the different stages of a fish's life cycle and why habitat protection and clean water are important for each of these stages. Students will also learn how fish fit into the food web/chain and local ecosystem. Students will be encouraged to describe ways in which humans can both threaten and protect the natural habitat of fish. The activity involves 3 bins full of little "fish" with magnets at their noses. Students use rods to catch fish. Each fish has a question regarding water and biology which the group then tries to answer. The activity also includes an aquarium with live fish, a model of an adult fish and a chart showing the growth of a fish from egg to fry.
